Aster novae-angliae

Aster novae-angliae is a popular native wildflower. This large, bushy perennial blooms from August to October with flowers in shades of pink, purple, violet and lavender with orange-yellow centers.

Aster novae-angliae is a vigorous grower and self-sower that works best in a prairie, widlflower or cottage garden with other large perennials like goldenrod and ornamental grasses. It attracts butterflies and beneficial insects. It is a good source of nectar for Monarch butterflies and a host plant for Pearl Crescent and Checkerspot butterflies.

Aster novae-angliae is drought-tolerant, and it tolerates a wide range of conditions from moist to dry soil and sand to clay. In small gardens, cut the plants back by half at the beginning of July to keep them compact and give them an attractive, rounded habit. Deadhead to prevent excessive self-sowing.

Also known as New England Aster, Michaelmas Daisy and Symphiotrichon novae-angliae. Deer resistant. Hardy in zones 3-8.
